MAGIC WORDS
Thus, if you try to grab her, you will find yourself clinging to
empty air, since she would have expected the blow to come
before you made a move, and would be long gone before you
started to go after her. She is also very good at using an oppo
nent's force against him, so taking a swing at her, or shooting
something at her, more often than not ends up coming right
back at you. Finally, as Dove she has a perfect eidetic memory,
forgets nothing, and notes all sorts of details the average person
would miss. In her words (regular series, issue #1), she is the
"ultimate strategist." To quote Barbara and Karl Kesel, Dove's
creators, from issue #15 (regular series): "As the boulder flies
toward Dove, she notes everything about it -- its size, mass, slow
rotation. She correctly identifies all ,427 of its weak points.
She calculates more than 10,000 possible reactions, and settles
on one. Her timing is flawless."8
Every time a magician speaks a magic word like dove and performs a light
ning-fast feat of prestidigitation, one could say he taps into a "Primal Source
of Order" as the character Dawn Granger does.
Dreams Begin
There is a song sleeping in all things
that dream on and on,
and the world begins to sing
if you only find the magic word.
-- Joseph von Eichendorff, "Schöne Fremde" (18 4)9
Mystique: "The chief spoke in a low, pleasant tone. 'Dreams begin.' With
two words of magic he completely captured the attention of my mind. Instantly
all barriers between us melted away. The mere glance of an eye or
slightest change of expression on the old man's face carried his full meaning."
