MAGIC WORDS P.D. Ouspensky explains that Kabalist philosophers study the four letters of the Tetragrammaton as "a powerful means of widening conscious ness. This idea is perfectly clear, for if the Name of God be really in all (if God be present in all), all should be analogous to each other -- the smallest particle analogous to the whole, the speck of dust analogous to the universe, and all analogous to God. The Name of God, the Word or Logos is the origin of the world. Logos also means Reason; the Word is the Logos, the Reason of everything. There is a complete correspondence between the Kabala and Alchemy and Magic. In Alchemy the four elements which constitute the real world are called fire, water, air and earth; these fully correspond in significance with the four kabalistic letters. In Magic they are expressed as the four classes of spirits: elves (or salamanders), undines, sylphs and gnomes."1 Meanings: Literally meaning "the four letters" in Greek, the sacred Tetragrammaton is comprised of four Hebrew letters (Yod, He, Waw, and He), spelling the unpronounceable name of the Hebrew God but often transliterated as "Yahweh" or "Jehovah." Facts: "According to the Qabalistic traditions, the world came into existence through the utterance of the sacred name of God, the Tetragrammaton yvhv."14 Thank You (see also please) I urge you with . . . passion to use the magic words 'thank you' every chance you get. -- Hal Urban, Life's Greatest Lessons (2002) Facts: "Belief in the power of magic words has really not diminished much over the centuries. The notion that 'please' and 'thank you' will bring magi cal results is still taught to children (at least by some folks) and still works."15 In Literature: • "'Maybe you should try the magic words,' he said. 'Hocus pocus?' Elvis asked. 'Please and thank you,' said Cluck." -- Denys Cazet, Elvis the Rooster and the Magic Words (2004) • "My favorite philosopher, Dennis the Menace, all dressed up in his magician's suit, said he could do only two magic tricks because he knew only two magic words, please and thank you." -- Zig Ziglar, Over the Top (1994) 1 The Symbolism of the Tarot (191 ) 14 Ted Andrews, Simplified Qabala Magic (200 ) 15 Allan Zola Kronzek, The Sorcerer's Companion (2001)
