MAGIC WORDS Variations and Incantations: • Agla, Aglai, Aglata, Aglatai These words are part of an incantation from The Key of Solomon (as translated by S. Liddell MacGregor Mathers). • Admai Aday Eloy Agla -- Arturo Perez-Reverte, The Club Dumas (1996) In Literature: • "Old Coignard has been warned by the Rosicrucian not to pronounce the word Agla, and the moment he does so, a wheel comes off his carriage." -- Aleister Crowley, Diary of a Drug Fiend (1922) • "'My name is Agla,' she said. 'My mother was Agla, and her mother was, also. It is the name for a healer, although some of the barbarians believe that I am a witch.'" -- Ben Bova, Orion (1984) • "'You request me?' replied the cabalist. 'Well, then, know that whenever you want the assistance of a Sylph, you have but to pronounce the simple word Agla, and the sons of the air will at once come to you. But understand, M. Abbe, that the word must be spoken by the heart as well as by the lips, and that faith alone gives it its virtue. Without faith it is nothing but a useless murmur. Pronounce it as I do at this moment, putting in it neither soul nor wish, it has, even in my own mouth, but a very slight power, and at the utmost some of the children of light, if they have heard it, glide into this room, the light shadows of light. I've divined rather than seen them on yonder curtain, and they have vanished when hardly visible. Neither you nor your pupil has suspected their presence. But had I pronounced that magic word with real fervour you would have seen them appear in all their splendour. They are of a charming beauty. Now, sir, I have entrusted you with a grand and useful secret. Let me say again, do not divulge it imprudently. And do not sneer at the example of the Abbe de Villars, who, for having revealed their secrets, was murdered by the Sylphs, on the road to Lyons.'" -- Anatole France, The Queen Pedauque (189 ) Ah Mystique: "The 'Ah' sound is a sacred seed syllable. It is found in most of the God and Goddess names on the planet (Tara, Buddha, Krishna, Yah, Astara), as well as many of the sacred words (Amen, Alleluia, Aum). Most mystical traditions worldwide also find it to be the sound of the heart chakra. Yet, as a vowel sound, it defies denomination or description as a mantra and is acceptable by everyone."118 118 Jonathan Goldman, "The 'AH' Sound to Generate Peace and Compassion" (2004)
